There’s a possibility to open a residential (after obtaining the NIE or TIE) or non residential bank account (with passport) with the major Spanish banks like BBVA, Santander, Sabadell, Caixa.
You can also open an account online with Revolut. All you need is to get a Spanish phone number and download the app.
In order to get you NIE, first you need to take an appointment at the police station. You can take the appointment here. Make sure you have all the necessary documents and your passport. Before the appointment you need to pay the tax Modelo 790_012 and fill the form. You can find more information and the forms here.
Once you have signed the lease, you can register with the city hall and get the empadronamiento. This document will grant you access to the state healthcare, state schools, parkings, libraries and other state services. You’ll also need this document if you want to change your driving license or register your car in Spain. This service is free. In order to obtain the padron, you need an appointment at one of the Ayuntamiento offices. You can get your appointment here.
Housing and accommodation
The rental price varies from 15€ to 23€ per sq.m depending on the neighborhoods. The areas like Eixample, Sarria Saint Gervasy, Pedralbes are considered to be the most prestigious areas and the price can go up to 20€ per sq.m.
Most families choose to live in areas such as Sarria-Sant Gervasi, Eixample, Pedralbes because of their proximity to most International schools. However, if you prefer to live close to the sea, you might opt for Poblenou-Diagonal Mar. It’s a young and fast expanding area of Barcelona with new infrastructure and lots of modern buildings.
If you’re a student or a young worker who wants to experience the authentic Barcelona vibe, you can choose Gracia, Eixample, Poble Sec, Sant Antoni, or even Born or El Gotic. Caveat: Gotic and Born are very touristic areas and get overcrowded in summer season.
